"The course was laid out in such a way that you could enter having absolutely no idea how to code and leave with a strong foundation that you can build upon as you further your education or career."
I applied to the HDip conversion course on a whim during covid, after 7 years as a children’s sport and health coach. I was growing restless with nothing to do over lockdown and wanted to finally explore an area I’ve always dreamed about, but never felt confident to step into.
Having previously studied at DkIT, I knew it was a great Institution, but again was apprehensive because I had a completely different background and wasn’t sure I could keep up with the course work. I had nothing to fear in that regard though, the HDip in Computing didn’t require any knowledge of computing, it was laid out in such a way that you could enter having absolutely no idea how to code and leave with a strong foundation that you can build upon as you further your education or career.
I also completed an internship at a large company as a part of my course, this helped me to put the skills I learned into practice and helped me feel so much more confident in my abilities. I continue to work for this company as a software engineer at present, all thanks to the skills I picked up during my HDip course, in particular Databasing, which I use almost daily.
My time there was challenging; It was very intensive, but so rewarding. I gained a new depth of experiences, found new strengths and skills I didn’t know I had, and made many meaningful connections. The lecturers were experts and so helpful to us during our short time there, working with us to break down any challenges we had and really solidifying our knowledge in the subjects.
I’m really proud of myself for having taken these initial steps, I only wish I had done it sooner. My plan for the future is to now expand on my work in the HDip and progress towards a MSc in Computing, hopefully at DkIT if they’ll have me!
