Wireless to Wireless: A History of Radio with Bernard Clarke of Lyric FM

The Department of Creative Arts, Media & Music Visiting Guest Series returns with Bernard Clarke, award-winning radio broadcaster (Lyric FM) and radio artist next Thursday, 28 September at 2pm in the MacAnna Theatre. Bernard will be delivering a talk titled: 'Wireless to Wireless', a history of the avant-garde in radio, stretching from the earliest years of radio right up to the present and coming through figures such as Vertov, Khlebnikov, Brecht & Weill, Ruttmann, Welles, Alessandro Rosetti and Gregory Whitehead. His talk will also address Fascist propaganda broadcasts from Nazi Germany and Mussolini's Italy, American nuclear bomb propaganda and the McCarthy communist witch hunts.

 



 

Biography

Bernard Clarke (B. 1967) is an award-winning radio broadcaster with RTÉ lyric fm, Ireland. His new music programme, Nova, has won five consecutive PPI Radio Awards (National Irish Radio Awards) and one New York Festival’s award; he’s also won prizes for documentaries on Patrick Kavanagh, Glenn Gould, The Doors, and Jimi Hendrix.

Clarke has also been shortlisted for the Prix Italia (2008), the Prix Europa (2011), the Prix Phonurgia Nova (2012); and the Black &White International Audio Festival (Porto, 2013).

In 2014 he won Best Audio at the Black &White International Audio Festival (2014); and also the Grand Prix at the 26th International URTI Radio Grand Prix,.

In 2015 he was tied-second at Prix Phonurgia Nova; was a headliner at the VI Norient Music Film Festival in Bern, Switzerland; made the Top 5 in the Grand Prix Radio Drama Awards; made the last 9 in the Prix Italia (Radio, New Formats) and won Best Audio at the Black &White International Audio Festival (Porto, 2015) for the second year in a row.

In 2016 he was a headliner at the CTM Festival in Radio Art, in Berlin; was narrator with the Ergodos players at Café OTO, London; made the recommended short list at the Prix Palma; won a finalist certificate and Bronze Medal at the New York Festival’s Radio Awards.

This year he has won more at New York Festival’s (Nova) and the Prix Marulic for Best Radio Drama 2017.Though he has extensive radio experience, his work in radio art is still relatively new with his radio art pieces being broadcast in Ireland, Germany, France, Austria, Czech Republic, Belgium, Canada, Israel, The Netherlands, Spain, USA and Australia. He is a member of the EBU Ars Acustica Group and his interests include sound, sound, and sound.
