Tunes and Tales: Celebrating Irish Traveller Traditions

18 February 2025

On Wednesday February 12th, we hosted Tunes and Tales, a special event celebrating the invaluable contributions of Irish Travellers to Ireland’s rich musical and storytelling heritage. Organised by Martin O’Donnachadha from our Access Office at DKIT, local schools, DKIT staff and students and the newly formed Louth Traveller Movement were invited to honour the traditions that remain a vibrant part of our culture today.

The event began with a screening of a documentary filmed by Tommy Fegan, an expert in the history, legacy, and impact of Irish Travellers on traditional music. Following this, Martin Nolan and Seamus Peadar from Na Píobairí Uilleann took to the stage, captivating the audience with a live music session and storytelling performance.

To round off the experience, attendees had the unique opportunity to try the uilleann pipes for themselves, immersing them in one of Ireland’s most iconic musical traditions. Tunes and Tales was a wonderful celebration of culture, connection, and the enduring legacy of Irish Traveller musicians and storytellers—helping to ensure these traditions continue to thrive for generations to come.
