Dr. Richard McElligott joins celebrations for the 140th Anniversary of the GAA
21 November 2024Lecturer in Modern and Irish History in the Department of Humanities at DkIT, Dr Richard McElligott recently joined a group to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the establishment of the GAA.
To mark the seminal moment in Irish sporting and cultural history when Michael Cusack, Maurice Davin and 11 others assembled for the GAA’s inaugural meeting in the Billiards Room in Hayes Hotel, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Dr McElligott (and fellow members of the GAA’s History and Commemorations Committee gathered in Hayes Hotel to make a special presentation to the current owners and to the descendants of the thirteen men who were present on that auspicious day.
As part of the 140th commemoration, Dr McElligott was also asked by the Association to write and article on how what happened in 1884 represented the birth of a sporting revolution.
