DkIT’s Ex-Her-Cise Event encourages over 60 Transition Year girls to explore a variety of sports

To celebrate Women in Sport Week and encourage the involvement of young girls in sports and exercise, over 60 Transition Years from Ardee Community School and Coláiste Rís came to DkIT to take part in this year’s Ex-HER-cise event. The initiative was designed to promote and celebrate the involvement of girls in sport and exercise, not only through active participation but through careers in coaching, leadership, officiating and governance which is in line with Sport Ireland’s vision for Women in Sport.

The event was kindly sponsored by Dole Ireland, who provided healthy options to fuel the participants throughout the day. To kick the day off, participants picked up a breakfast smoothie from the Dole Ireland Smoothie Van! They then took part in a Girls in Sport Quiz & Educational Workshop covering topics such as the importance and benefits of physical activity and how the menstrual cycle can impact their participation.

Throughout the day, the transition years had the opportunity to try a range of fun activities, including a Field Based Fitness Analysis, Pilates with Noeleen Gregory and Crossfit with SKF Crossfit Dundalk. They wrapped up the day with a visit to the DkIT Sport Campus where they got to see the state-of-the art facilities and engage in some team building challenges.

Fiona Hackett, Lecturer in Health and Physical Activity in DkIT said:

“We were delighted to once again host Transition Year students for “ex-HER-cise @ DkIT”, during Women in Sport week 2025.  It is so important that we use platforms like Women in Sport week to highlight the various roles that women and girls can have in participating, studying and working in sport, exercise and physical activity.”

Undergraduate students from the BSc (Honours) in Health and Physical Activity degree programme at DkIT assisted in the delivery of the event.  This Health and Physical Activity Degree programme aims to educate a category of professionals in the areas of health, physical activity, and wellbeing. Graduates from this programme attain the skills necessary to assess, plan, promote and evaluate lifestyle interventions and physical activity programmes that will enhance the quality of life of individuals that they work with.
