DkIT’s Artificial Intelligence Experts Present their Research

Artificial Intelligence experts from DkIT's Regulated Software Research Centre recently attended several esteemed conferences where they were invited to present their research.

The Regulated Software Research Centre (RSRC) in DkIT is a world leader in the development of methods and tools to assist medical device manufacturers to comply with the regulatory requirements related to the development of medical device software, whether embedded within the device, standalone, or as part of a networked medical device. The research in the centre is conducted in collaboration with industry partners, national agencies, the international standards community and other research centres. The research team are active in the development of international standards and technical reports related to medical device software development and IT networks.



Prof. Fergal McCaffery, Head of School of Informatics & Creative Arts and Dr Róisín Loughran, Centre Manager, Regulated Software Research Centre (RSRC) were invited to present at the esteemed Artificial Intelligence Conference (AI Con) at the Titanic Museum in Belfast this December. They presented directly on ‘Challenges of Artificial Intelligence within Medical Device Software’ and took part in a panel discussion on ‘Harmonising AI: The Role of Standards in AI Regulation’. AI Con 2022 was hosted by Kainos to investigate the adoption of Artificial Intelligence across society.

Prof. Fergal McCaffery, Dr Róisín Loughran and Ms Karla Cepeda also attended and gave a joint lecture entitled ‘Healthcare Supply Chain Cybersecurity and AI Regulatory Challenges’ at the Medical Technology Ireland Conference in October. Prof. Fergal McCaffery was additionally invited to give a presentation at the highly prestigious IBEC Global Access event in Galway in October. This is Ireland’s leading medical technology industry Quality Assurance and Regulatory affairs conference, hosted by the Irish Medtech Association with attendance from multiple Ministers and TDs.

'Experts from Industry and Academia alike are recognising that while the innovative possibilities around Artificial Intelligence (AI) are very exciting, care must be taken to ensure such methods are developed and deployed in a fair and ethical manner. There is no room and no excuse for unethical technologies in today's society.'

Professor McCaffery and his team in Regulated Software Research Centre were also the recent recipients of a phenomenal €1.2 million Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) award for a project run in partnership with University College Dublin (UCD) called: Regulatory Compliance Framework for Trustworthy AI Medical Device Software (Reg-Fr-AIMs). This specific research project which was awarded the funding targets for the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology for Medical Device Software.
