DkIT Students Win 3rd Place at GameCraft Christmas GameJam

15 December 2016

On the 10th of December, a team of six 3rd year students studying on the BSc (Honours) in Computing in Games Development at DkIT took part in the GameCraft Christmas GameJam at D.I.T..

GameCraft is a games event that aims to help build the gaming community in Ireland. Its aim is to create events that allow game-makers to meet, share ideas, have fun, compete for prizes and most importantly, make games! The first Dublin GameCraft took place in February 2012 with over 120 attendees producing more than 35 games. Since then, Dublin GameCraft has gone from strength to strength.

The GameCraft Christmas GameJam attracted 12 teams from various universities and institutes of technology in Ireland. Teams were given eight hours to create a game under the theme ‘Rescue’. The DkIT team decided to create a Christmas game, where the player must rescue elves from exploding presents. The game made use of a virtual reality (VR) headset called HTC Vive. The DkIT game was called ‘Elf Rescue’.

The idea of the DkIT team’s game is that the player is placed inside Santa’s workshop. Here, elves are rushing presents to Santa’s sleigh before he leaves on his Christmas run. Unfortunately, some of the elves accidently carry faulty, exploding, presents that the player, as chief safety officer of the North Pole, has to confiscate and throw away to safety.

The DkIT team consisted of Charlie Behan, Ciaran Mooney, Cormac White, Daniel Lynch, Fiach McHugh and Patrick Reid. The team did exceptionally well and were placed 3rd in the contest.
