14 March 2022

A team of five Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management students, representing Dundalk Institute of Technology, have finished in a magnificent Third place at the 37th Irish Hospitality Institute (IHI) National Hospitality Business Management Game 2022, at the Clayton Hotel Dublin Airport. It is an inter-college competition for 3rd and 4th year students studying Hospitality Management. The Game supported by Dalata Hotel Group and Failte Ireland saw the teams complete three Challenges which tested the Students, business acumen and management skills in the areas of Business Development strategy, Revenue management and Human Resource management

The team was comprised of Niamh Warren, Niamh Mulholland, Xin Xu (Caroline), Anja Meidl and Donnacha Lynch.  They were tutored by lecturers Maria Roddy Freyne & Lorraine Dunne  The challenges took place over the past week with their final challenge yesterday being a presentation to a panel of industry experts.

In challenge 1 the students were required to operate a fictitious hotel for 6 months post Covid using the HOTs Business Simulation system. For challenge 2 and Challenge 3 the students had to choose a real-world hotel to represent and for this they chose the Crowne Plaza Dundalk.

Challenge 2 required them to present a report to their ownership which detailed their strategy to address the current issue of recruitment, retention and attracting talent to the hotel.  In challenge 3 their task was to produce a sales and marketing plan for the hotel for 6 months from June onwards, which they then had to present to their hotel ownership. The judges took on this role when they presented to them live on Monday 7th March.

The students were put under pressure to complete all the challenges but they thoroughly enjoyed it and found it a hugely beneficial learning experience.
