DkIT Students Clinch 3rd Place at the 36th IHI National Hospitality Business Management Game

11 March 2021

A team of four Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management students, representing Dundalk Institute of Technology, finished in a magnificent Third place at the 36th Irish Hospitality Institute (IHI) National Hospitality Business Management Game 2021.

Given the current restrictions the IHI was not able to run the Game in its normal format of an onsite delivery so the event was delivered virtually.

The competition had teams representing young event & hospitality managers of the future from all over Ireland.  The team led by Maria Roddy Freyne and Lorraine Dunne, included; Elona Morrison, Niamh Warren, Caroline Xin Xu & Sarah Coburn.

The competition commenced on Friday 26th February with the completion of Challenge 1 where the team were required to devise experiential packages and complete a digital marketing plan for a hotel of their choice.  Students then worked on Challenge 2 for a week. This challenge required them to create a market strategy and to reimagine how the hotel could deliver meetings and events including hybrid events.   The students were also required to undertake challenge 3 which was a Business simulation. The scenario for the simulation involved them undertaking decisions in order to successfully run a fictitious hotel post Covid19.

The final part of the competition took place on Monday 8th March where the students were required to present their operational and marketing plan from challenge 2 to a panel of judges, made up of industry representatives.

The event concluded on the afternoon of Monday 8th March with a Student Seminar followed by an Awards ceremony. The competition is a valuable learning exercise for students as it gives them an opportunity to develop marketing, human resource, financial, teamwork and presentation skills.  We would like to congratulate Elona, Niamh, Caroline and Sarah on their fantastic achievement. They have worked extremely hard during the competition and they have done themselves and DkIT proud.
