DkIT Student Springboards to Milwaukee Festival
17 July 2023Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) are delighted to report that one of their part-time Digital Design students, Orla Begley from Drogheda has recently been offered a fantastic opportunity to gain industry insight into the internationally renowned Milwaukee Irish Fest. This USA festival is held over 3 days with over 100 acts across 16 Stages and includes traditional Irish to indie-rock performances.
Orla was selected for this amazing opportunity as part of DkIT’s close links with the Milwaukee Irish Fest Committee. All full time and part-time students in the Creative Arts, Media and Music Departments were notified of this fantastic experience and encouraged to apply. Orla who graduated from DkIT in 2020 from a Business Studies and Management Degree, is now working in the marketing department of estate agents Sherry Property, decided to upskill and is now a part-time student on the springboard+ funded course in Digital Design in DkIT.
Orla said,
“I applied for this all expenses paid opportunity and I’m absolutely delighted to have been selected, I’m so excited to head over to experience the organisation of a festival of this size, I know I’m going to learn so much and gain an understanding of the skills needed a cross the functions of an event like this”.
Dr Adèle Commins, Head of Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music, DkIT said
“The experience offered at this festival gives students an incredible overview of the range of skills needed to run an event like this. It is a wonderful opportunity for DkIT students to gain practical knowledge and be involved in an intricate event of this nature in Milwaukee. It provides students the opportunity of applying their skills in a challenging environment in America and develop networks which may be of help to them in their future career”.
Orla applied for the online Springboard+ funded Certificate in Digital Design in the Institute with the aim to gain additional marketing skills and a detailed knowledge and understanding of both the creative and developmental strands within the Digital Media Design discipline. Modules taught on this course include, Digital Visual Communication, Motion Graphic Fundamentals, Branding & Editorial Design Fundamentals, Digital Marketing Design Concepts, Entrepreneurship for Digital Industries and a key part of the course is a work placement for Digital Industries.
Orla said of her course
“I’ve learnt so much on this course already, it’s fantastic that is part-time and online, which means I can fit it into my week around working and being a mother, the content on the course is so practical and there is a work placement included in the program. The skills I’ve learnt so far are so relevant and totally industry focused and this course perfectly complements my current marketing skillsets”.
