DkIT Receives Funding to Launch Virtual Hub To Support Flexible Learners

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has announced €321,014  investment to support the extension of learning supports & services to part-time learners via a new Digital Student Support Hub. The investment was part of the new €23 Million Innovation & Transformation Fund which was recently announced by the Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh T.D. and Minister for Higher Education Mary Mitchell O’Connor T.D..



For DkIT the investment will support the expansion of services to the Institute’s growing number of part-time learners. Services will be provided via a single web portal and will be accessible 24-7 via the Moodle Virtual Learning Environment. The latest investment aims to support DkIT’s strategic objective to double the number of part-time learners by 2020.

Speaking about the announcement, DkIT President, Michael Mulvey PhD said,

“We are delighted to announce this new investment in our online support services to our students. At DkIT we are committed to ensuring higher education is accessible to all types of learners and to providing learner-centric supports to ensure student success.  As more people engage in lifelong learning opportunities for upskilling or continuous professional development, we recognise that they need to access important online learning supports in their own time.”

The Virtual Hub at DkIT is one of 22 projects awarded nationally by the Department which embody collaboration and innovation across the higher education sector and focus on transformation. Speaking about the announcement, Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh T.D. added,

“This €23 million fund is being used to reward and support higher education institutions that are coming up with innovative ideas to attract people to third level and those that are doing more to create flexible options for learning. These Government-supported initiatives will create new opportunities and help to position Ireland’s education system as a leader in inclusiveness, diversity and flexible models of education and lifelong learning.”
