DkIT lecturers and researchers feature at the Society for Music Education in Ireland (SMEI) conference

12 December 2024

DkIT’s Dr. Kayla Rush and Dr. Niall Coghlan recently presented the findings of an NTUTORR-funded workshop at the annual Society for Music Education in Ireland (SMEI) conference, held at University College Cork. Their well-received presentation, titled "Negotiating Reflective Journal Assessments in Music Production Pedagogy," explored the use of reflective journals in the BA/BA (Hons) Audio & Music Production Work Placement module, offering valuable insights into the pedagogical approach.

Additionally, DkIT student Darren Culliney presented his research, “Fine Tuning the Northern Box: Exploring the Teaching of the Button Accordion and Its Tuning Systems from an Ulster Perspective.” A doctoral candidate at DkIT, Culliney is funded by the Technological University Transformation Fund. His project delves into the role of the button accordion in Ulster, investigating its cultural, political, and community significance under the supervision of Dr. Daithí Kearney (DkIT) and Dr. Verena Commins (University of Galway).

The Society for Music Education in Ireland (SMEI) serves as an umbrella organisation for individuals, groups, institutions, and organisations involved in various aspects of music education across the island. As an affiliate of the International Society for Music Education (ISME), SMEI has previously hosted events at DkIT and provides an invaluable platform for sharing research on diverse topics in music education, including innovative pedagogical methods, new technologies, and community music initiatives.
