24 November 2020

Dr Kieran Nolan, lecturer on the BA (Hons) in Creative Media and Co Director of DkIT’s Creative Arts Research Centre was among the winners at the prestigious 21st IDI Awards from the Institute of Designers in Ireland, held virtually on Wednesday the 4th of November 2020. Kieran won the Experience Design Award in this year’s competition for his virtual reality design project VR SuperGun.

Even though ‘virtual’ the event was a celebration of Irish design and showcased the contribution of over 460 designers & collaborators across Ireland, and Irish designers based abroad. 2020 had the largest amount of entries the Awards have ever had in this long-standing and respected competition.

VR SuperGun is a custom hardware and software design allowing play of original arcade platforms through a network connection, reconstituting the material form of the arcade cabinet in digital space. In addition to playing the game presented, the user can inspect the cabinet and it’s surroundings, while accessing the technical specifications and history of the game and cabinet.

On viewing Kieran’s VR SuperGun project the Industry Judges commented:

The idea of allowing the user to inspect the cabinet and hardware is unique and educational
