DkIT Host Children’s Book launch on Climate Change

19 December 2022

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) were delighted to recently host the launch of a series of children’s books investigating energy and climate change by Larry Staudt.

Larry Staudt the author is a climate activist, retired engineer, ex lecturer of DkIT and was part of the team that developed the DkIT campus wind turbine.  The book launch explored climate change and how to talk to and engage with children on the issue with hope and positivity.

The event kicked off with a warm welcome to all by Dr Breda Brennan, Head of School of Engineering and was proceeded by an introduction to Renewable Energy at DkIT by Dr Paul MacArtain, Acting Head of Dept of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering. Paul spoke about the contribution Larry has made to the Institute and town of Dundalk from both an educational and renewable energy point of view, he also reminisced on how Larry contributed to his own educational journey and ongoing passion for renewable and sustainable energy. Larry Staudt the author then treated the audience to some readings from the books and discussions around climate change and the world we live in.

Larry said

“These books were prompted by the need for children to be made aware of the coming challenges society faces on its journey to a sustainable future. But they are not just to raise awareness (i.e. "we have a problem"), especially since the kids may well already be aware of the problems. The more important idea is to discuss them in a way that is empowering ("I can help with this problem") and in a way that is hopeful (without hope you might not even try to help with the problem). It is my perception that many if not most parents don't really know how to discuss these issues with their children, because they themselves are short on hope. So, in that sense the books are for parents as well.”

Larry Staudt's books are available on Amazon.
