DkIT and N-TUTORR launch new Digital Mapping Facility to support campus navigation

With support from the N-TUTORR project, DkIT has launched a brand-new campus mapping and wayfinding platform designed to help students, staff, and visitors navigate the Institute’s spaces, rooms, and locations. Developed in collaboration with MazeMap, a leader in digital wayfinding solutions, this innovative tool is accessible online, offering detailed routes around campus to help everyone find their way. In the first three weeks since its launch in DkIT, the product has had almost 8,500 engagements.

 



The platform has been especially beneficial for DkIT’s first-year students this year, ensuring they could confidently navigate their new environment from the moment they arrived.  A key feature of this platform is its focus on enhancing accessibility, allowing students to identify routes that avoid staircases, providing a more inclusive experience for all. With first-year students representing the largest group of new arrivals on campus, this tool will ensure they have the support they need to easily locate lecture rooms, study spaces, and social areas, giving them one less thing to worry about during their first term.  The platform provides tailored solutions to fit individual preferences, allowing all staff, students and visitors to easily navigate their way around campus.

This initiative is the result of a collaboration between DkIT’s Student Services, the Disability Office, the Estates Office, the Institute’s Climate and Sustainability Manager, and the DkIT N-TUTORR team, who worked collectively to ensure this resource became a reality.

Linda Murphy, Academic Admin & Student Affairs Manager said:

We are thrilled to provide this new digital support for students, especially our incoming first-year cohort. Navigating a new campus can be overwhelming for some, and this will provide an easy and efficient way to locate spaces and classrooms, helping our students feel more comfortable from day one.” 

Derek Crilly, Senior Staff Officer, Student Services said:

Having the opportunity to work on this project has meant we have been able to identify more avenues to meaningfully support our students, and other stakeholders, on campus. Feeling a sense of belonging with our college is critical for students, and we see this initiative being able to support everyone on campus as a collective.” 

This mapping facility not only makes navigation easier but also embraces DkIT’s broader vision of integrating helpful technology to enhance the student experience.  Geraldine Kneel, Disability Officer at DkIT said:

This mapping resource marks a significant progression in our ongoing efforts to make our campus more inclusive. The ability to identify accessible routes that can avoid staircases or other barriers is a huge win for accessibility, ensuring that all students, staff, and visitors can move around freely and confidently.”

Christian Maas, Climate and Sustainability Manager at DkIT emphasised the benefits of the tool for anyone on campus saying

Embedding MazeMap is a vital step to campus navigation not only for students and staff but also for contractors and visitors. We hope to develop the system to include transport and other relevant information in the future.”
