DkIT’s Language Students Extraordinaire Visit to France

08 January 2024

First-year French language students from the School of Business and Humanities along with their lecturer Vicky Leahy recently embarked on a weeklong intensive Business Project with the Institute’s French partners at IUT (University of Technology) Lens in the north of France.

It was a jam-packed week of activities and the DkIT students were more than delighted to hit the ground running as they integrated and engaged enthusiastically with their French student counterparts. This immersive cultural experience pushed the students out of their comfort zones. However, their lecturer Vicky Leahy remarked that they rose to the occasion gallantly.

The students not only flexed their language muscle, but they also partook in a myriad of happenings that supported their cultural understandings of France. They participated in an visite culturelle to the Vimy memorial which commemorates the 66,000 Canadians who fought and died in France during WW1, this also incorporated a visit to a reconstituted trench. A trip to le marché de noël in Arras and then as session of bowling proved to be a very successful bonding exercise.  Other trips included a visit to Louvre-lens museum, a well-deserved trip to la Grande Ville of Lille and another marché de noël rounded off the work week.

The difference in the ease of communication between the groups from France and Ireland was palpable within a few days. During the week the students were then put into équipes(teams) and worked together. Each équipe (team) was allocated their respective roles for the évaluation interview which happened later in the week, each team had a 30-minute interview involving the recruitment process role-play followed by questions on the selection process.

Friday included a last déjeuner and au revoir to the French students at the IUT before heading back to Lille and then back home to DkIT.
