Damien in Electrical Installations’ Competition Victory

18 August 2021

Damien Flynn from Blackrock, Co Louth, recently won the Electrical Installations competition in Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT), which is a preliminary round for the World Skills Ireland Competition. Damien is now the region’s candidate for the WorldSkills Ireland National Competition in March 2022.

Damien, who works for Halpenny Electrical in Knockbridge, Co Louth, was tasked with installing an electrical installation within an 8-hour time limit, following a technical brief provided by World Skills Ireland to the correct measurements and specifications. His work was then judged on its electrical function, wiring, testing and inspecting, installation quality and measurements. Damien was judged as the best of the 3 competitors at the end of the day.

Gerard Galligan – Head of Section Electrical & Motor Trades DkIT

“On behalf of DkIT we would like to congratulate Damien on his achievement and wish him every success in the future competitions.”

DkIT has a long history of successful apprentices competing in WorldSkills and the preliminary competition is the start of that journey for Damien. Damien is supported by the lecturers at DkIT, as a Centre of Excellence in Apprenticeship, in conjunction with the HEA, SOLAS, Department of Education and the Government of Ireland.

The follow up competition brings together the best apprentices in Ireland over a gruelling 3-day competition. The event takes place in the RDS Dublin where the winner will progress onto the WorldSkills International Competition in Shanghai, China in October 2022. Competitors from nearly 60 Member Countries and Regions will take part, and close to 1,300 competitors.
