Kelly Mulholland

Active IQ Certificate in Fitness Instructing, 2016

Kelly Mulholland’s first career was as a florist in her home town of Dundalk. She and her partner Eddie ran it for five years before some prescient advice from a close neighbour prompted them to wind up their business successfully just before the recession really hit. Kelly then took a year out to indulge her passion for kite surfing and physical fitness and during that period, attended a new class called Anti-Gravity Yoga. Kelly loved it so much that she wanted to set up her own anti-gravity studio but to do that, she needed recognised and accredited qualifications in physical fitness and instruction.

Kelly applied for the Active IQ Certificate in Fitness Instruction at Dundalk IT, a part-time evening course of one academic year. The Active IQ qualification is accredited by the European Health & Fitness Association and is recognised in Ireland, the UK and Europe. Kelly said,

“It was a fantastic course and the lecturer Michael McCorry was just brilliant. We covered anatomy and physiology as well as gym instruction and I loved every second of it.”

Following the course in DKIT, Kelly went on to obtain other qualifications in Ireland and the UK, covering spinning, anti-gravity yoga, step, kids’ gymnastics and freestyle fitness yoga instructor. In September 2015, she took the plunge and with the support of her partner Eddie, opened her own studio, KFitness, in beautiful Stephenstown Pond, just outside Dundalk.

Kelly said,

”To be honest, I didn’t expect the business to take off as fast as it did and I signed up for another year long course in DKIT, the Active IQ Certificate in Personal Training, in the same month as I opened the doors of my business. I found it incredibly challenging trying to study, manage the business and look after my young twins at the same time. I nearly threw in the towel at Christmas but the course lecturer Michael McCorry just wouldn’t let me quit! I am so grateful for his support because I went on to pass all my exams in June 2016."

Kelly’s studio now has 12 anti-gravity hammocks and 15 spin bikes and business is flying, thanks to social media and word of mouth. She’s an avid user of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat backed up by regular newsletter ezines. Kelly also networks with other gym instructors in London to keep on top of the latest trends.

Kelly said,

“The gym instructor course at DKIT was the foundation for my business. As a busy mum of twins and a business owner, I found the college staff very supportive and they helped me in every way they could. I would highly recommend DKIT part-time courses to anyone. They could be the building blocks for your future as they were for mine.”
