James Wilson

BSc (Hons) in Health and Physical Activity

"The best thing for me is definitely the craic within the sports teams, nothing beats it! Especially when we won the All-Ireland for Fresher’s last year. The atmosphere was unreal and everyone really came out of their shell especially when you win something."
James Wilson is from Dromore, Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan and is a 2nd Year BSc (Hons) in Health & Physical Activity student.

“I enjoyed making my sports marketing project and it actually taught me a lot of things that I wasn’t expecting, like how to create and add value to a brand. It definitely made me realise that I don’t want to branch into the business/marketing career market. I definitely prefer the science and health elements such as anatomy and nutrition that my course provides but I do think that it is extremely beneficial that the BSc (Hons) in Health and Physical Activity carries a mix of these elements. Some people in my class liked the business side that the project brought out and they would be interested in sticking with that so in that sense it’s good as it allows people to make their own decision.”

“I chose the course because I like sports and when I read into the course description on Qualifax I was interested in the qualifications and the opportunities for progression because I would like to go into Physiotherapy as a career but you could also progress onto strength and conditioning and nutrition. There is a nice mix of practical work and theory work in my course, not only do we get our degree at the end of our 4 years but we also get qualifications in gym instruction, circuit training, personal training, exercise referral, exercise and nutritional interventions for obesity and diabetes and the management of lower back pain. Getting here is easy, it takes around 30 minutes depending on traffic”

“I am a Sports Scholarship student and I play Gaelic and I am a corner forward. I play for the college as well as my team Toome, I also played for the Monaghan county seniors last year and the U20’s the year before that. The Scholarship opportunities at DkIT were very appealing to me because the scholarship offered here is definitely one of the best around. The application was easy and Derek Crilly from Sports & Societies was on hand if I had any questions.”

Best thing about DkIT?

"The best thing for me is definitely the craic within the sports teams, nothing beats it! Especially when we won the All-Ireland for Fresher’s last year. The atmosphere was unreal and everyone really came out of their shell especially when you win something. I would recommend applying for a sports scholarship or joining a sports team for anyone who’s coming to college and interested in sports. The friends you make and the craic you have is a great experience."
