RESEARCH INTERESTS
Derek was/is the DkIT coordinator in the following Erasmus+ and other international projects :
Title: WalkAbout, Learning Through Contextual Mobile Gaming
This Erasmus+ funded project involved DkIT and partners from Portugal, Poland, Finland and Belgium. It included one ten-day intensive project, which was held in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. The project involved eight BSc (Honours) in Computing in Games Development students from DkIT and eight students from each of the other four partner colleges building game apps that could be used by schoolchildren who go on tours at Vila Nova de Gaia’s botanic gardens.
Title: GENIUS… Innovative interdisciplinary Contextual Education Using Games Development
Including DkIT, this Erasmus+ funded project involves five partner colleges. The other four are from Poland, Finland, Belgium and Portugal. The project lasts three years and includes three ten-day international projects: one each in Finland, Belgium and Portugal. Each project involves students from each of the five partner colleges working in multinational, multidisciplinary, teams to build game apps. The DkIT students are from the BSc (Honours) in Computing in Games Development programme.
Title: Serious Gaming for a Better Europe
This Erasmus+ funded project involved DkIT working with three NGOs from France, Belgium and Holland and two partner colleges from Belgium and Portugal.
The project included two ten-day intensive projects: one in each of Portugal and Belgium, with 12 DkIT students from the BSc (Honours) in Computing in Games Development participating in each project. This project has resulted in the creation of an immersive contextual serious game that can be used by teachers in secondary schools as an aid in the teaching of contemporary issues, such as migration, racism and gender equality.
Title: JEU… Jouons Ensemble pour l'Union Européenne
This Erasmus+ funded project follows on from the "Serious Gaming for a Better Europe" project. It consists of university and NGO partners from seven EU countries. It will involve two ten-day intensive projects: one in each of Portugal and Germany, with 12 DkIT students from the BSc (Honours) in Computing in Games Development participating in each project.
Title: eCOAL... Collaborative Open Activity for Learners
Each year, a group of between eight and 12 students from the 2nd year of the BSc (Honours) in Computing take part in a one-week intensive app development project in Lens, France. This project started out as a bilateral annual project between IUT Lens and DkIT. It has now grown to also include students from Poland and Portugal.
Title: GGULIVRR@Lodz... Generic Game for Ubiquitous Learning in Interactive Virtual and Real Realities
Approximately 12 students from DkIT take part annually in this collaborative international project. The countries involved in this project include Poland, Ireland, Portugal, Belgium, Finland, France, Slovenia and Ukraine. The project takes place in Lodz, Poland for a period of approximately ten days each September. Funding for this project is been provided by Polish based international companies. As a result of the students participating in the project coming from various fields of study – such as games development, computing, digital media, business, education and tourism – this project provides participants with a multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary, multi-national, experience. Several of the game ideas that were conceived during this project have been developed further by the student teams or by companies who partner with the project.
Title: Start IT: Development of Soft and Future Skills using DigitalEntrepreneurship
Start IT brings together students from six member countries to work on mobile apps in diverse, international, interdisciplinary teams to acquire soft skills, future skills, entrepreneurial skills, and IT-skills. The main horizontal goal of this project is “Digital Transformation”. The mobile apps that the students develop will focus on the secondary goal topic of “Climate Change”. The sector priority that this project focuses on is “Innovative Learning and Teaching“. Approximately ten students from DkIT take part annually in this collaborative international project. The project runs until January 2025.
Title : BIP Masuria
The project “BIP Masuria” ran in 2023. Including DkIT, this project involved four partner colleges. The other three are Lodz University of Technology, Universidad de Alcala, HTW Saar, Universidade de Aveiro. During a five-day mobility, students have the opportunity to connect with nature, explore the outdoors and take part in outdoor team-building activities.
Title : Towards 15 Minute Eco City
The “Towards 15 Minute Eco City” ran in 2023. Including DkIT, this project involved four partner colleges. The other three were from Poland, Portugal and France. The project included a seven-day mobility, during which time students developed apps and business plans around the concept of the 15-minute city.
As part of the Erasmus Staff Mobility programme, I have delivered classes in various European colleges. I have also organised for European academic colleagues to visit DkIT on staff mobilities over the past number of years.
