Sold-Out Performance of ‘Marbhna’ a great DkIT success13 September 2018
Last month, the sold-out performance of the Requiem mass ‘Marbhna’ by Odhrán O Casaide was a great DkIT success, brought about by a collective of local music groups and soloists. The performance took place as part of the week-long series of events which took place in Drogheda for Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann.
Presented by DkIT, the Augustinian Church, Drogheda was packed to capacity, with conductor Craig Stuart Garfinkle leading an orchestra comprising members of the ‘Fr. McNally String Players’ Dundalk, the ‘Ardee Concert Band’, the ‘Drogheda Brass Band’ and the ‘Tredagh Stringers’, Drogheda.
Drogheda-based full-voice choir, the ‘Tredagh Singers’, provided excellent choral support, while soloists included a classical trio which included DkIT staff member contralto Bernadette Brereton and DkIT student tenor Lee Harding, with sean-nós singer, Sibéal Ni Chasaide, giving a beautiful traditional flair to the overall sound.
The concert included suitable readings in both Irish and English with readers including Michael Mulvey and Sheila Flanagan, respectively the President and Registrar of DkIT. To the obvious enjoyment of the audience, the event proved that traditional and classical music and music-making is alive and well in the North-East region and was a super opportunity for members of the DkIT community to show their local spirit and flair.
