Nursing Students Present Funds Raised to Charities
04 April 2024General Nursing students raised a total of €2,135 for two local charities, North East Cancer Research & Education Trust (NECRET) and the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre. The students organised two events held in the Muirhevna Building on campus which raised critical funding which is crucial in providing essential support services to cancer patients and their families during their most challenging times.
This year’s fundraising event had added significance for the Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Early Years due to the loss of a dear friend and colleague Geraldine Killeen who herself worked tirelessly on raising awareness and funds for these charities over many years. Geraldine’s lovely family were able to attend the presentation of the raised funds to the respective charities.
Ann Everitt-Reynolds, Lecturer, BSc in General Nursing, said
“Since 2015 both nursing students and staff in the Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Early Years have engaged in fundraising events with a total of over €13,000 in funds raised for charities such as: The Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre, North East Cancer Research & Education Trust (NECRET), Irish Cancer Society, Irish Motor Neurone Disease, Specialist Palliative Care Services to name but a few.
We were delighted to raise a total of €2,135 for our fundraising events this year. But this year the fundraising event was more personal for all in the Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Early Years due to the loss of our dear friend and colleague Geraldine Killeen from breast cancer. We are deeply grateful to all the DkIT community for their continued support in helping to raise funds for such worthy charities”.
