More Success for DkIT’s Film & Television Production Students

07 November 2022

It is the start of another successful academic year for the students of the BA (Hons) in Film and Television Production. Year after year this course continues to produce award winning teams and films. Every year 3rd year students are tasked with creating a short film as part of their curriculum. Each year the films produced have been astoundingly successful in film festivals both nationally and internationally.

The recent successful films were all made last year as part of the 3rd year year-long Film Project module where students use the model of Screen Ireland's Focus Shorts to facilitate them making an industry-standard short film.

This year a short film called ‘Reflection’ was selected for the prestigious Richard Harris film festival in Limerick which will screen at the end of Oct 2022. The film was made by DkIT students Megan Hughes, Stephen Finlay, Conor Leddy, Wiktoria Rabiega and Jessica Doherty.

The Richard Harris Film Festival which was founded in 2013 and runs over five days in Limerick is a showcase for young filmmakers, feature filmmakers from the Irish Diaspora, theatrical performers, poets, singers, and writers. Richard’s family members attend each year, his cousin Hayman Harris sits on the board of directors and his son’s Damian, Jared and Jamie, provide advice and enjoy meeting filmmakers in Limerick at the many events that take place during the festival weekend.

Another fantastic film by last year’s 3rd year students which has been extremely successful is the short film ‘Soulmates’. This film has been selected for a slew of esteemed film festivals including Gaze International LGBTQ+ Film Festival, Cinemagic Young Filmmaker 2022, Student World Impact Film Festival and the Indie Shorts Mag Short Film Festival. This popular film was made by Shona Kelly, Sarah Olatunbosun, Rhys Jones, Adam Pringle and Bill O'Keeffe.

A further successful film by DkIT’s students that has recently caught the eye of international judges is the short film ‘No Evil’ which was selected and got through to the semi-finals for the Los Angeles Cinematography Awards. This film was made by Oisin Martin, Alex Mahon, Conor Farrelly, Harry Cleary and Hugh O'Neill.

Sara McCann, Lecturer in Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music said

Short films can really act as calling cards for young filmmakers on their first steps into the industry so we are delighted to see that the films made on our year-long Film Project module in 3rd year continue to impress at not only a national but also at an international level, and we look forward to many more screenings and awards for these students and others on the programme’
