Emeritus Professor Pat Brereton Delivers Inspirational Lecture on 'Greening Irish Film and Environmental Ethics' to DkIT Film and Theatre Students

14 February 2025

Emeritus Professor Pat Brereton recently offered an inspirational lecture on “Greening Irish Film and Environmental Ethics” to second and third-year students from the BA (Hons) in Film and Television Production and the BA in Theatre and Film Practice at DkIT. This very well attended talk, was part of the visiting guest series, an event that provides students with great opportunities to meet scholars and practitioners from various backgrounds

Professor Brereton is one of the most important scholars on environment and film, with various books published on the topic. He lectured at DCU for over 24 years and, currently, is co-director of the Research Centre for Climate and Society and co-opted director of Green Foundation Ireland.

Dr. Ingrid Lewis, Lecturer in Film Studies, said:

“It was a great privilege to welcome Professor Brereton at DkIT and listen to his engaging lecture that covered topics such as sustainability in the film industry, ecofeminism, green growth, lifeboat ethics, and the ’selfish gene’.”

Highlighting the pivotal role that media has in raising awareness and engaging with environmental issues, Professor Brereton invited students to generate “new creative imaginaries, and new ways of telling the climate crisis story.” The young students in attendance were challenged to think about the future of the planet and their key role in transforming sustainability into reality through their film and media work.
