DkIT Welcome Guest Lecturer on Ireland's Ancient East

15 November 2022

Dundalk Institute of Technology recently hosted the Hospitality Department guest lecture series. As part of the series the Institute welcomed Mr Mark Mohan who is Ireland's Ancient East Manager at Fáilte Ireland, with responsibility for counties Louth, Meath, Monaghan, and Cavan.

Mark facilitated discussions on Ireland’s Ancient East from his perspective as the manager of this initiative. He reviewed the recovery of the tourism sector after COVID-19 and the positive actions that Fáilte Ireland has implemented in moving quickly to help the industry. He then introduced the researchers, staff, and students to the vision for Ireland’s Ancient East to 2032. Mark has developed a focus on regional brand strategy and sustainable tourism management which he shared at this lecture.

The Questions and Answers session at the end of the presentation allowed students from various programmes at DkIT including the BA (Hons) International Tourism Management, BA (Hons) Event Management, BA (Hons) Hospitality Management, and BA Culinary Enterprise to raise their own questions related to their studies.

Mark was treated to lunch by the students of the BA Culinary Arts, which reflected well on initiatives by DkIT and Failte Ireland to develop food tourism in the region. Mark had an opportunity to discuss future links between Fáilte Ireland and DkIT, which can inform programme development and research in the Institute and ensure that DkIT responds to the needs of stakeholders in the region.

He also highlighted the opportunities for careers in tourism in the region and further afield, presenting a very positive outlook for the future.
