DkIT To Showcase Creative Talent at Fís 17

26 May 2017

The Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) is delighted to announce the launch of Fís 17 which takes place on Wednesday 31 May 2017 at 6pm in the PJ Carroll Building. The exhibition will open to the public on Thursday 1 June from 12pm-6pm and admission is free for all.

Attendees will have the opportunity to see DkIT’s state-of-the-art TV studio, audio and radio recording studios, a photographic darkroom, performance spaces, edit suites and a screening room which has facilitated the development of innovative projects and exhibitions once again this year.

Fís 17 will feature exciting and creative work from students of the Communications, Video and Film, Music Production, Media Arts and Technologies and Multimedia Web Development programmes at DkIT. The projects, installations and films being exhibited and screened will represent the diverse creative skills of our students and are of interest to a wide audience.

Speaking about the launch of Fís 17, Dr Adèle Commins, Head of Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music noted,

‘Fís 17 provides students with an important opportunity to showcase and celebrate their achievements and share these projects with their community. The skills developed in preparing for the event ensures that our students are employment-ready and we are confident that this year’s graduates will become successful innovators in the creative industries both nationally and internationally. Fís 17 is an example of the valuable contribution that DkIT graduates can make in the context of the new Creative Ireland Programme 2017–2022, which places creativity at the centre of public policy.’

  • Films directed and produced by students on the BA (Hons) Video and Film Production explore themes of gender and science fiction. In the film ‘Divilment’, four Irish ‘mammies’ plan and execute the daring robbery of a hotel safe. The film ‘Ludd’ features an artist who is living in a world dominated by Luddites, a political movement that violently opposes the spread of technology.
  • The projects from students on the BA (Hons) Communications in Creative Multimedia tackle a range of subject matters including the college experience for mature students, schizophrenia and civic engagement.
  • Tracks produced by students on BA (Hons) Production of Music and Audio include a diverse range of genres including rock, jazz and electronic music and these will be available at listening stations in the PJ Carroll Building.
  • Projects undertaken by students on the BA Media Arts and Technologies reflect their engagement with innovative technologies during the year with monsters featuring prominently in their creations. ‘The Monster Hunters’ go on a journey to uncover mysteries about creatures from international folklore, while ‘Nass’ is a series of interactive story books for children containing stories by children about their experiences in natural disasters.

Fís 17 is a wonderful opportunity for both industry leaders and local communities to come together in DkIT’s creative hub to experience creativity and the arts.
