DkIT Students Present at Prestigious SURE Network Conference

06 November 2023

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) are proud to report that two of last year’s 4th year students recently presented at the prestigious SURE Network Conference SURE2023 which was held in TU Dublin in October. The SURE 2023 Conference was the sixth in the series of Science Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Conferences. 57 Students from throughout Ireland who completed their Final Year Project in a science discipline in 2022-23 presented their undergraduate research work at this event as either an oral or poster presentation. Over 300 people were in attendance on the day including some staff and students from DkIT.

The two DkIT students that were selected to present were previous students from the Department of Life and Health Sciences. Michelle Sherry who completed her fourth-year project supervised by Dr Valerie McCarthy had a poster presentation and delivered a ‘Spotlight’ oral presentation on her work looking at the nitrate inflows into a humic lake using high-frequency monitoring data. Jing Ling Wong who completed her fourth-year project supervised by Dr Jade Pollock was accepted for a full oral presentation and shared her research on rhabdoid tumour cells. Jing Ling has now embarked on a PhD in TCD. Both students were excellent ambassadors for DkIT.

There was great feedback from the group of 12 DkIT students from across 1st-4th year who attended as audience. The conference gave these current students an opportunity to gain an understanding of the work which has been undertaken by recent graduates, and the career opportunities that exist for graduates in Scientific disciplines. The DkIT graduate presenters are now invited to submit their work to SURE-J which is Irelands first and only undergraduate expert reviewed research journal. The fifth volume of the SURE-J will publish in December 2023.
