DkIT Students Host an Inspiring Event Celebrating Women in Business

02 March 2023

Dundalk Institute of Technology’s Event Management Year 3 students recently hosted an inspiring and motivating Business and Marketing Symposium. Women in Business was the hot topic of conversation at this event as March 1st marked the beginning of Women’s History Month. Women’s History Month aims to empower young women around the nation with courage, self-esteem and willpower and this fantastic event didn’t disappoint.

This packed event which was so professionally organised by the year 3 students as part of their final project under the guidance of their lecturer, Karen Commins, accommodated three guest specialists from the Events, Marketing and Tourism Industry. The speakers on the day included Emma McCabe - Managing Director of Epic Management, Aisling Byrne – Managing Director of Journey Through Ireland and Kelly Petit – Managing Director of Empire Productions. These three extremely proficient women discussed topics such as business set-up, growth and development, adversities in business, staffing, digital marketing, social media presence and its importance, event management, marketing your business and brand.

There were several inspirational themes that arose in conversations with the speakers, all of these three businesswomen had found gaps in the market they are in, they saw the opportunity and fearlessly took it. The three female experts all spoke about the importance of finding solutions and being flexible in an ever-changing world and discussed the impact that Covid had on their individual businesses. The key takeaway from the speakers was the importance of resilience, its ok to fail and for things not to work out to plan but you must find solutions and get back on track.

Master of ceremonies on the day, Maria Roddy Freyne, DkIT Lecturer said,

“It was a fantastic event, and the academic team were so proud of the students who organised it, the guest speakers came from all sectors of the events, marketing and tourism industries and brought fantastic insight into their areas of expertise. These three women were very inspirational, and I know the students got so much insight and knowledge from them. Our course is extremely employability focused and organising an event like this from start to finish is an excellent and practical experience for the students”.
