DkIT Students Celebrate the Lunar New Year

27 February 2024

DkIT was delighted to recently host an event celebrating the end of the Lunar New Year festivities. This event was all about students and staff coming together, having fun, and appreciating the different cultures within the DkIT community.

The occasion included a gong fu cha, the traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony, where students got to experience the elegance of this ceremony.

Students and staff immersed themselves in the art and culture of tea as Vicky Shuai, skilled tea master and lecturer from UCD, guided them through this ancient tradition, adding a special and meaningful element to the festivities. There was the opportunity for students and staff to be introduced to Mah-jong and Go (Chinese board games), Shufa (Chinese calligraphy) and Jianzhi (red paper cutting, a popular folk art used as decoration) and to engage in conversations with DkIT International students and staff from China, Malaysia, and other regions to explore linguistic diversity and gain insights into different cultural perspectives. The event also offered a variety of tasty small treats inspired by the delicious culinary traditions of the Lunar New Year.

Students in the School of Business and Humanities at DkIT have the option of selecting an elective module in foreign languages (French, Spanish, German or Mandarin) or in Intercultural Studies (awareness to European, American, African and Asian cultures)

This event is a joint effort by the Foreign Languages and Intercultural Project lecturers team and Malaysian students (Joycelyn Jia Wen Loh, Yi Zhen Ong, Wan Lee Low and Zhi Hong Liew to name a few), with the help of the Hospitality department and the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Office in DkIT.  It is funded by Languages Connect/Post-Primary Languages Ireland.
