DkIT features on RTÉ's Céilí House for Fleadh Launch

Staff, students and graduates of Dundalk Institute of Technology featured prominently in Céilí House on RTÉ Radio 1 on Saturday 23rd June. If you missed the show you can listen back on RTÉ Radio 1.



Piano accordion player Dr Adèle Commins, Head of Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music and recent recipient of the President's Prize for Research at DkIT, performed with the house band. She is part of the programming committee for this year's event with particular responsibilities for Seachtain na Gaeilge.

Dr Daithí Kearney, co-director of the Creative Arts Research Centre at DkIT and director of the DkIT Ceol Oirghialla Traditional Music Ensemble, performed on banjo with the house band for the evening. He is focused on organising the Gig Rig for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann with Comhaltas Regional Manager Kay Webster and, along with Dr Commins, will facilitate a symposium on tradition and transmission in Irish traditional music at the Fleadh in Drogheda.

Current student on the BA(Hons) Applied Music programme Ciara Brannigan is integrally involved with the Drogheda branch of Comhaltas with whom she performed with on the night. She is involved in a number of aspects of the Fleadh with a particular focus on Seachtain na Gaeilge. Ciara will also be competing in the upcoming Leinster Fleadh.

Brendan McCreanor, a graduate of music at DkIT, performed with his band Kern. As recent winners at the Templebar Tradfest, Brendan will be jetting of for an American tour including a performance at Milwaukee Irish Festival, during the Fleadh but will feature in concert in Drogheda at the start of the week.

Another DkIT graduate, Darragh Ó hÉiligh, performed an uilleann pipes solo on céilí house. Well known for his organisation of 'Music at the Gate' each month in Drogheda, Darragh is a prominent figure in the musical life of Drogheda and will be very involved for Fleadh 2018.

Many more staff, students and graduates of Dundalk Institute of Technology will feature prominently during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, which runs from 12th to 19th August 2018, with concerts, lectures and other activities.
