DkIT Music Graduate Jane with new release

08 October 2024

Fiddle player Jane Meehan from Dundalk, a graduate of the BA (Hons) Music at DkIT has released a new EP of traditional music with her musical collaborator, harpist Jill Devlin from Roscommon, entitled Jill and Jane.

Jane studied music at DkIT from 2015 to 2019, specialising in solo performance in Irish traditional fiddle. While at DkIT she was a member of the traditional music ensemble and travelled to Scotland and Norway to perform with ensembles from the Institute. She also featured on the Céilí House programme on RTÉ broadcast from DkIT and was a regular soloist in concerts at the Institute.

Speaking about her experience at DkIT, Jane reflected:

“I found a great passion for Irish traditional music in DkIT during my studies, I had been playing trad my whole life, but being surrounded by like-minded talented musicians really heightened my experience.”

After graduating from DkIT, Jane completed her MA in Irish traditional music performance at the University of Limerick where she met Jill. Jane attended Milwaukee Irish Fest, the largest Celtic music festival in the USA, as a guest in 2019, and as a performing artist in 2022 alongside harper Jill Devlin. She has also performed in Norway, Czech Republic, and Scotland as part of various different Celtic music festivals.

In addition to performance, Jane has a considerable amount of experiencing teaching music on fiddle, banjo, and tin whistle. She taught in Dundalk as part of JJ Gardiner CCÉ, and in the University of Limerick during her master’s programme.

Jane has recently relocated to Perth, WA, where she has joined Perth CCÉ, Sean Doherty branch. She has adjudicated the Fleadh Cheoil competition in Australia, and taught at an annual music camp. She has compiled a tunebook aimed at session musicians entitled Tunes You Should Know, a taster of which can be accessed on her website https://www.janefiddle.com/
