13 December 2024

The Inclusive Learning and Teaching Sub-Committee of the Academic Council, in collaboration with the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), proudly hosted Dr. Thomas Tobin and Dr. Mary Ann Tobin at DkIT for the launch of ‘You Can UDL It!’. This innovative resource is designed for educators and professionals seeking practical, sustainable ways to integrate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into their teaching and student engagement practices.

‘You Can UDL It!’ showcases an inspiring collection of real-world examples from across the institute, illustrating how UDL principles are transforming classrooms, labs, and learning environments. Each contribution highlights the “plus-one” approach championed by Dr. Tobin in his keynote address—simple, incremental changes that yield significant, transformative outcomes.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Diarmuid O'Callaghan, President of DkIT, spoke about our responsibility to embrace inclusive approaches, including UDL, to allow our students to flourish and achieve their potential. Dr. Sheila Flanagan, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Registrar, congratulated the book’s contributors on the excellent work they are doing in the area of UDL as reflected in their stories, noting that ‘You can UDL It!’ will be a valuable resource across the Institute and beyond.

A heartfelt thanks goes to the book’s editors—Dr. Moira Maguire, Dr. Anita Byrne, Ms. Karen Cummins, and Ms. Orla Hughes—whose dedication brought this vision to fruition, as well as to the many contributors who shared their UDL experiences and insights.

‘You Can UDL It!’ reinforces DkIT’s commitment to fostering inclusive, innovative, and sustainable learning experiences for all learners.
