DkIT Announces Partnership with Sounding the Feminists

The Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) is delighted to announce a new partnership with the voluntary activist organisation, Sounding with Feminists. Sounding the Feminists is an Irish-based, voluntary-led collective of composers, sound artists, performers, musicologists, critics, promoters, industry professionals, organisations, and individuals, committed to promoting and publicising the creative work of female musicians. Other partners who support the movement include Music Network, Irish Baroque Orchestra, Contemporary Music Centre, Irish National Opera, Contempo Quartet, Maynooth University Music Department and the Quiet Music Ensemble.



 

Speaking about the partnership, Head of Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music, Dr Adèle Commins stated

"Equality is a guiding principle in DkIT. The Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music endeavours to promote equality across all of our activities and influence the music industry and society more generally. Through embedding equality in our education system, we can support the work of Sounding The Feminists and other movements who are making a difference in our society."

Demonstrating their support of Sounding the Feminists, in association with the Centre for Creative Arts Research at DkIT, the Department will host a one-day symposium on women in popular and traditional music in Ireland on Friday 23 November 2018. The symposium will question why female musicians are under-represented in our cultural history.  The event coincides with the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Ireland. The event is open to the general public will be of particular interest to academics, educators, composers, sound artists, performers, musicologists, critics, promoters, industry professionals, organisations, and individuals, with a passion for promoting and publicising the creative work of female musicians.
