Can Artificial Intelligence Replace Librarians?
20 November 2024Mary McShane, Library Assistant at Dundalk Institute of Technology recently published an article in the National Library of Ireland's journal 'An Leabharlann,’ discussing themes such as critical thinking and AI.
Mary’s article examines whether AI can replace librarians by assessing the core skills required for the profession and how AI can replicate them. Her research finds that while AI can handle tasks like database searching, it struggles with physical item searches, especially in smaller libraries.
Critical thinking, needed to manage information accuracy and avoid bias, is a skill AI lacks, as is the ability to provide leadership and interpersonal interaction. AI can assist with tasks in project management and marketing but cannot replace human collaboration. Ultimately, the article concludes that while AI can enhance certain aspects of librarianship, it cannot fully replace the human elements such as empathy, critical thinking, and personalised service.
