Louis Stewart and the Jazz Guitar in Ireland: A Critical Evaluation

The purpose of this research is to examine the contribution of Louis Stewart to the development of Jazz and specifically the Jazz guitar in Ireland, placing particular emphasis on his contribution to performance and composition. This is a practice based project involving a major performance dimension in the form of two public recitals and two lecture recitals which include works by Louis Stewart and selected Irish contemporary jazz guitarists, as well as international jazz guitarists who have influenced the development of Stewart’s own style. In addition, it includes a critical assessment of Stewart’s discography, providing further insight to the performance and interpretation of his work. In conclusion, this study will examine the extent of Stewart’s role in the development and promotion of Jazz guitar in Ireland and assess his influence on contemporary guitar styles.
