Books, eBooks & Journals available at De Chastelain Library.

The library holds print and online collections of books and journal articles. As well as academic textbooks and journals, the collection includes theses, novels, newspapers, DVDs, CDs and sheet music. Explore the collection and access below.

Find books using our online catalogue. Books are organised by location (e.g. Main Shelves) and by shelf number (e.g. 658).

E-Books

Along with printed books, the Library has a range of e-books. You can read them online, search within them, download them and print from them. E-books can be accessed from any device that has an Internet connection, so you don’t need to be in the Library to read them.

A journal is a collection of articles of academic or general interest. Academic journals are published at regular intervals and reflect recent research.

Can't find what you're looking for?

You can request a book if all copies of it are on loan to others. To do this, find the book on the catalogue and click 'Place hold’ button. We will email you when the book is ready for collection from the Library Desk.

If the Library does not own any copies of a book you need you may be able to access it through another library using Interlibrary Loans.

Books

Find print books and other material using our online catalogue. Check if the item is available and find the shelf number. Most books are located on the Main Shelves. Shelf numbers 001 to 499 are on Floor 1. Shelf numbers 500 to 999 are on Floor 2.  Visit our borrowing section for details of how many books you can borrow, or see our support section for tips on how to search for books.

Main Shelves

Most books are located on the Main Shelves. Shelf numbers 001 to 499 are on Floor 1. Shelf numbers 500 to 999 are on Floor 2.

Short Loan

Short Loan books are kept behind the Library Desk and can be requested from a Library staff member. 

Special Collections:

The Library also holds two special collections.

Mount Oliver Collection: Located in the rolling shelves on Floor 2, and donated by the Mount Oliver Trust, this collection consists chiefly of books on religion. It also includes subjects such as education, history and social studies. Most books from this collection may be borrowed.

T.K. Whitaker Archive: This collection was donated by Dr. T.K Whitaker, and is located in the Whitaker Room on Floor 2. Books from this collection can be viewed in the Library on request but cannot be borrowed. Request to view a specific book from this collection at the Library and Information Desk.

E-Books

Along with printed books, the Library has a range of e-books. You can read them online, search within them, download them and print from them. E-books can be accessed from any device that has an Internet connection, so you don’t need to be in the Library to read them.

E-book collections are hosted in a non-DkIT supported environment. You should be aware of this and take the necessary precautions with regard to the security of your personal data. 

Search the Library's entire e-book collection on MultiSearch. Some of the larger individual e-book collections are listed below. E-books require you to log on with your network username and password, which are the details you use to log in to your DkIT email account.

Once you sign in to a database you are agreeing to abide by Copyright Legislation & Licence Agreement Terms and Conditions.  Databases may be accessed only by Authorised Users e.g. registered staff and students. Under our License Agreement Terms and Conditions all databases are for private individual study and research only.  They must not be used for commercial purposes.   Users may not reproduce, distribute, display, modify, transfer or transmit, in any form, or by any means, any Database or Service or any portion thereof.

 

E-Book collections:

  • ProQuest Ebooks Central: Multi-disciplinary. ProQuest Ebooks Central provides access to books owned by De Chastelain Library.
  • Ebsco eBook Collection: Multi-disciplinary. Select 'eBook Collection' on the EBSCO Host page to view the full collection of e-books.
  • Ebsco eBook Academic Collection: Selection of multidisciplinary eBook titles representing a broad range of academic subject matter. 

Free E-Book collections:

Journals

A journal is a collection of articles of academic or general interest. Academic journals are published at regular intervals and reflect recent research. Articles are published only when they have been read and approved by other experts in the field (peer review).

De Chastelain Library holds both print and electronic journals.

Electronic journals

To search for an electronic journal click Publications at the top of the MultiSearch screen and browse or search by title. Click into Full Text Access below the title returned to see our holdings. 

You cannot search for articles via Publication Finder. To search for an article, enter the article title directly into the MultiSearch search box.

 

Print journals

Print journals are kept in the display areas on Floor 2, and in the archive area which contains older issues of journals (the rolling shelves behind the Mount Oliver Collection). To search for print journals enter the journal title in the catalogue or in MultiSearch Publications Finder.

Print journals cannot be borrowed.
