Course Summary

This 2-year part-time course (funded by Springboard+) is designed for existing level 8 graduates from either a technical or an artistic discipline who wish to upskill for the animation industry and other divergent industries in which animation expertise is key. It is the only course of its kind in Ireland and it aims to give graduates a detailed knowledge and understanding of the creative, developmental and programming strands within the 3D computer animation discipline and also make them skilled in the use of a range of 3D animation applications.

If you are unemployed and in receipt of a jobseekers payment (including Farm Assist and Qualified Adults of Working Age) you are NOT eligible for two-year ICT Conversion courses.

This course aims to provide students with a strong grounding and transferable skills in Digital Animation Production processes and techniques for 3D Computer Animation. The course is developed to enable learners to become competent in the more artistically – focused disciplines within computer animation and produce graduates with a range and depth of technical and artistic skills necessary to become future Technical Directors. This Higher Diploma has a specific focus on Technical Direction for the computer animation of film, television and gaming. 

The course aims to enable learners to become competent in the more artistically – focused disciplines with in computer animation and produce graduates with a range and depth of technical and artistic skills necessary to become future technical, character or environment artists, animators, modelers, sculptors and riggers as well as project managers and animation producers.

A substantial focus of the course will also develop the professional skills of the graduate to enhance their career opportunities through professional development including interview skills, and networking, presentation and communication skills. 

This course is aimed at candidates from a variety of backgrounds, including traditional animation, film, multimedia, fine art and architecture.

The course is a flexible 80% online, 20% face-to-face part-time Higher Diploma ideally suited to those who cannot commit to a full time study course.

Online learning will be supported using an online virtual learning environment (Moodle). For face-to-face learning attendance is required on the DkIT campus one Saturday per month. Extensive coaching and mentoring workshops will be provided.

Mixture of online (80%) and face-to-face (20%) delivery

Graduates of the course will have a detailed knowledge and understanding of both the creative, developmental and programming strands within the 3D computer animation discipline and will be skilled in the use of a range of 3D animation applications. Graduates choosing a 3D Animation career will have an understanding of all aspects of a multi-disciplinary 3D animation team and will be equipped to follow career paths such as:

  • Animator
  • Modeller
  • Rigger
  • Texture Artist
  • Compositor
  • Visual Effects Artist
  • Lighting Artist
  • Project Manager

A fee of €700 applies to employed / self-employed applicants (Springboard subsidised) payable by the 28th February 2021

This programme is designed for graduates who wish to upskill for the Animation, Games, or Film industry. 

The entry requirements for the programme are as follows:

An Honours Bachelor Degree (NFQ Level 8) (or other internationally recognised equivalent), in the field of study of art, design, computing or engineering.

AND

An approved Portfolio of relevant Art work.

Applicants who do not meet the academic entry requirements but who have significant relevant experience in the technology or media sectors are encouraged to apply under the DkIT Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy that allows recognition for both formal and informal learning, non-accredited personal and professional education and work based training. International students must have a minimum level of English equivalent to IELTS 6.0.
