Course Summary

Participants will gain practical knowledge in the area of data wrangling with regard to on-set file backup procedures, the techniques and softwares used to ensure integrity of files produced on-set, and the range of hardwares used in industry for long term backup purposes. This will include familiarity with LTO (linear tape open) tape storage systems. The programme will also give participants a full understanding of high-end digital production and post-production workflows relevant to the role of Digital Imaging Technician. Upon completion of this course, participants will either be ready to establish themselves as audio visual professionals equipped with skills for the digital age. The intention of this programme is that students will be equipped to take up the role of Data Wrangler or Digital Imaging Technician immediately upon completion of the course.

The aim of this programme is to prepare individuals for employment within the Audio Visual Industry, specifically in the roles of Data Wrangler and Digital Imaging Technician. The course is aimed specifically at those who already have some level of experience in audio-visual production with the intent to upskill participants so they are capable of filling these roles which are relatively new in high end digital audio-visual production. Participants will gain an understanding of how the Audio Visual Industry operates, and gain the skills and abilities required to work in the audio visual industry in the digital age.

Participants will gain practical knowledge in the area of data wrangling with regard to on-set file backup procedures, the techniques and softwares used to ensure integrity of files produced on-set, and the range of hardwares used in industry for long term backup purposes. The programme will also give participants a full understanding of high-end digital production and post-production workflows relevant to the role of Digital Imaging Technician.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be ready to establish themselves as audio visual professionals equipped with skills for the digital age. The intention of this programme is that students will be equipped to take up the role of Data Wrangler or Digital Imaging Technician immediately upon completion of the course.

The course comprises six taught modules over two semesters. These are as follows:

  • Digital Archiving
  • Colour Correction and Grading
  • Digital Imaging 1
  • Data Wrangling 1
  • Advanced Data Wrangling
  • Advanced Digital Imaging.

Assessment is on the basis of coursework and/or exam, and will include simulations of real-world projects and scenarios developed in conjunction with industry participants. Module content will include case studies of workflows utilised in the Irish digital audio-visual sector.

The programme will be delivered through a combination of onsite and online teaching. 

All lectures will be delivered online - one hour per module per week.

Practical classes will take place in the DKIT PJ Carrolls Building during the evening - (two per week)

Graduates of the programme may wish to pursue their education further and would be qualified to do such in a range of areas relating to the audio-visual industry. This may include the BA (Hons) Film and Television Production.

For those applicants without standard entry requirements for a primary degree and with considerable relevant industry experience coupled with the completion of this certificate they may be eligible for entry via the RPL process. Those graduates who hold a Level 8 qualification in addition to this certificate may consider applying for the MA by Research.

Participants are required to have a minimum Level 7 degree in a related discipline or have a record of employment in the areas of Audio-Visual Production and Digital Editing. Applicants not holding a primary qualification will be interviewed as per the RPL policy.

The course is aimed specifically at those who already have some level of experience in audio-visual production and are interested in developing their careers in this area. The intent is to upskill participants so they are capable of filling two roles which are relatively new in high end digital audio-visual production - those roles being  that of (i) Digital Imaging Technician and (ii) Data Wrangler.
