Unfortunately, a lack of the relevant skillset to compete in this industry continues to pose a significant entry barrier to many graduates. This course has been designed in response to the needs of employers in this area to help bridge this knowledge gap for the technically minded students.

The course content aims to extract current ideas in finance and place them firmly in their natural setting of mathematics and computing. The course will allow learners to gain valuable skills in mathematics and computing while developing an appreciation for underlying ideas and theories in economics in a financial setting.
Candidates for this course include existing graduates in a financial or related industry wishing to upskill or graduates with a level 8 or level 7 degree in a field such as computing, engineering or business desiring the necessary competitive edge to gain entrance to the industry.
Course modules are:
- Fixed Income Financial Mathematics: This module introduces the learner to mathematics of bond pricing and fixed income models. The learner will explore key concepts such as yields, bonds, convexity and interest rate models.
- Computational Finance I: This module introduces the learner to the algorithms behind fundamental financial modelling. The learner will explore key concepts such as bisection method, Ridders method, secant method, Newton-Raphson method applied to financial instruments.
- Mathematics of Options: This module introduces the learner to mathematics of pricing financial option in continuous and discrete frameworks. The learner will explore key concepts such as, for example, the arbitrage theorem, option pricing, binomial models, Black-Scholes pricing model.
- Computational Finance II: This module introduces the learner to advanced topics in financial modelling. The learner will explore key topics such as the binomial tree and Black-Scholes model for pricing.
One year, part-time evening course runs Monday and Wednesday evenings 18:00–20:00 (subject to change)
Given the focused nature of the programme, it is possible to map the potential career path of graduates. Potential career areas include:
- Corporate Finance with specializations including strategy management, profit/loss forecasting, audit coordination, mergers and acquisitions;
- Commercial Banking with specialization including checking and savings management, IRA and loans specialization, loan officers, marketing executives;
- Investment Banking with specialization including corporate securities, trading, mergers and acquisitions, market analysis;
- Hedge Funds with specialization including financial analyst, trader, quantitative analyst, portfolio manager;
- Other general areas which will be open to this student, given the numerical and mathematical nature of the course include data analyst, financial planner, insurance broker, and public accountant
The standard entry requirement is an Honours Degree (NFQ Level 8) or equivalent in Computing, Business or Engineering, or equivalent, with at least 15 combined credits in the following areas: mathematics, finance or programming.
Level 7 graduates with a minimum of a Merit 1 Ordinary Degree in Computing, Business or Engineering, or equivalent, that includes at least 15 combined credits in the following areas: mathematics, finance or programming, are also eligible.
Applicants with at least two years relevant work experience may access the programme via the RPL route.
This course will be of particular interest to:
- candidates already in employment in the financial or tech markets who wish to up-skill in order to fill and take advantage of obvious job opportunities
- candidates who hold a Level 8 or level 7 degree (or equivalent) in a technical, business or science discipline with substantial elements of mathematics or computing.
