The Certificate in Fundamentals of Blockchain is currently offered as a stand-alone certificate. It was conceived in response to demand from, and in consultation with, local industry, in recognition of this emerging technology and the critical role it will play in business, research, development and education.

This 10-credit level 6 certificate introduces the fundamentals of Blockchain technology and Bitcoin protocol. It uses cases studies to explore the building blocks of Ethereum blockchain, Solidity and smart contracts.

The programme consists of two semesters, semester one “Blockchain Essentials” introduces the fundamentals of the technology, with semester two: “ Blockchain based Distributed Applications and Smart Contracts” outlining how the technology can be applied. The programme has a significant applied focus including case studies and guest contributors.

This short specialist course contains two modules that will be delivered over two semesters:

  • Semester 1 module: Blockchain Essentials
This module will introduce the Foundations of Blockchain. It will provide a broad overview of the essential concepts of blockchain technology and Bitcoin protocol and will enable the learners to develop a basic understanding of a Blockchain.
  • Semester 2 module: Blockchain based Distributed Applications and Smart Contracts
This module will introduce Blockchain based distributed applications and Smart contracts using Ethereum Blockchain platform. It will explore the building blocks of Ethereum blockchain, Solidity and smart contracts.

Classes will be delivered online on Wednesday evenings at 6pm to 8pm over two semesters.

It is envisaged that this short, focused level 6 programme will add to the skillset and knowledge of those interested in this significant and emerging technology. It will be particularly relevant to those wishing to employ Blockchain in their current employment setting.

DkIT standard entry requirements onto a level 6 programme are:

  • Five Grades at O6 or H7 in Leaving Certificate AND Mathematics Grade F2, O6 or H7 AND English Grade O6 or H7 OR Irish Grade O6 or H7
  • Mature students are not required to have the minimum Leaving Certificate requirements but should provide any relevant additional information in support of their application.
  • Applicants will also be required to have background in business, finance, technology or other relevant industry experience. Applicants may be interviewed.

This course is aimed at those who are seeking to learn more about this novel technology under continuous professional development (CPD). As such, the course aims to add to the skills and knowledge by providing professionals with an introduction to theoretical and technical aspects of Blockchain Technology.
