Course Summary

The aim of the Springboard HCI funded Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Data Analytics for Sustainable Agri-Food Production is to facilitate the development of graduates who will have advanced knowledge and skills in the use of data analytics in agricultural contexts. These skills can be applied directly to farming, the Agri-Food and other Agri-Businesses, in advisory services and in the fast-growing ‘agri-tech’ sector.

This programme has been developed in response to this identified skills gap. It is a cross-disciplinary programme developed collaboratively between the School of Health and Science and the School of Engineering in DkIT in consultation with external colleagues in Teagasc and the Agri-technology Industry. It will cover advanced skills in database management, data collection and analysis in addition to an in-depth analysis of the application of information technologies in Agriculture.

It will be delivered on a full-time basis over the course of one academic year. There will be a total of 15 hours per week on the programme including 12 hours of face to face classes per week. These will be scheduled over two working days to facilitate learners already working in the sector or farming on part-time basis. Learners will participate in individual research or 'new venture' project in collaboration with an external partner.

  • Agri-Analytics Project OR Agri-Analytics Entrepreneurship Project

Semester 2:

  • Applied Technologies in Crop and Grass Production
  • Precision Animal Production
  • Data Communication and Protocols
  • Agri-Analytics Project OR Agri-Analytics Entrepreneurship Project
  • Bioinformatics in Agriculture OR Automated Systems in Agri-Food Industry

The modules on the programme are highly applied and practical in nature and focus on the student identifying and maximising transferable and industry-specific skills by linking their learning to workplace practices and activities.

More specifically the students will carry out a research or new venture project in collaboration with the Agri-Tech Industry or an external agency managing agriculture data such as Teagasc.

The course will be delivered on a full-time basis over one academic year.

Classes will take place on the DkIT campus on 2 days per week.

Graduates will progress to career opportunities in the broad Agri-Technology industry, the Agri-Food Industry, Teagasc and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), in roles that require an advanced level of knowledge and skills in the field of data-analytics in Agriculture.

Graduates may also find employment in data-analytic or digital roles in other sectors.

Graduates may avail of opportunities (as they arise) to gain a Masters or PhD by Research, either in DkIT or another HEI.

The following are eligible to apply for courses in 2021/22 academic year (subject to the applicant meeting all requirements, e.g. academic requirements):

  • Returners: May apply to all courses if they meet the nationality/visa requirement and residency criteria.
  • People in employment: May apply to all courses if they meet the nationality/visa requirement and residency criteria.
  • The unemployed or formerly self-employed: All courses are open to these categories of applicants
  • Recent Graduates: To participate in an NFQ Level 9 (Post-Graduate) course, 2020 graduates will be required to pay 10% of the course fee (€510).

For eligible applicants, HCI will fund 90% or 100% of the programme fee. Find out if you're eligible 

Applicants must have an honours degree in Agriculture or a related discipline with an award grade of 2.2. or higher. Honours degree graduates from Engineering, Science and Computing disciplines will be considered where the applicant has an agricultural background and/or knowledge. All suitable candidates will be interviewed as part of the selection process. Candidates are expected to have some experience and/or knowledge of quantitative techniques and command-line interface computing.

For candidates who do not meet the above entry criteria but have considerable relevant experience, the DkIT Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy and procedures will be applied. 

Graduates who have an interest in quantitative techniques and technology and wish to pursue a career in the fast-growing Agri-Technology sector or in advisory or data-analytical roles within the agricultural industry or services.
