Course Summary

The Certificate in Management Fundamentals aims to introduce students to the general principles of management and communications to enable more effective management practice in the workplace.

Students of the Certificate in Management Fundamentals will be introduced to a range of management and communication theories and concepts, as well as techniques to apply in practice relating to: managing people, leading, managing change, managing conflict, negotiating and communicating professionally in a range of organisational contexts.

This course combines both the Certificate in Management and the Certificate of Communication Skills courses.

The Certificate in Management Fundamentals will cover the following modules:

  • Management Studies - The aim of this module is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the general principles of management and organisational behaviour against the backdrop of economic and social sustainability. Content includes: Introduction to Management // Leadership // Business Environment // Planning & Organising // Controlling & Influencing // Organisational Culture // Business Ethics // Managing & Leading Change // People at Work // Managing Conflict at Work
  • Communication Skills - The aim of this module is to develop in students an understanding of the role of effective professional communication in business. The module provides an introduction to the theory behind professional communication in business contexts informed by recent research. It also develops in students an understanding of how these theoretical frameworks can be applied to real-life, real-time business interaction. It also provides the opportunity to practice a range of professional communication skills including oral and written presentation, teamwork in diverse groups and negotiation. In addition, it helps to develop students’ general understanding, awareness and communicative effectiveness, as well as critical thinking and research skills. It develops in students an understanding of current thought on best professional practice in professional communication skills in business contexts. Content includes: Study Skills // Research Methods // Reports // Harvard Referencing // Business Correspondence // Language & Style

The mode of delivery is part-time with some blended via DkIT Moodle. Assessment of this Certificate will comprise Course work and an examination. Exams take place in January and May.

Classes run on Wednesday evenings (6.30pm - 9.30pm) each week and on 4 Saturdays over one Semester as follows:

  1. Saturday 28th September 9am - 3pm
  2. Saturday 19th October 9am - 3pm
  3. Saturday 9th November 9am - 3pm
  4. Saturday 7th December 9am - 3pm

Graduates of this Certificate in Management Fundamentals may be eligible for exemptions on other similar programmes within DkIT and with other providers.

Learners who successfully complete this Certificate will be offered the relevant module exemption from the DkIT BBS part-time degree.

Learners completing this may also apply to the full-time BB in Business & Management programme and, provided they meet entry criteria for that programme, will be offered exemptions for the relevant module that they have successfully completed.

All applicants will normally hold a relevant level 5 qualification (or equivalent) or higher.

This course is best-suited to:

  • Students who wish to be able to apply a range of professional communication skills including assertiveness and negotiation, listening and reflecting, explaining and questioning in the business context.
  • Students who wish to gain the skills to establish and manage a basic research project, including the design and administration of primary data gathering and the collection and evaluation of research articles in an ethical context.
  • Students who wish to gain knowledge of the general principles of management and communications to enable more effective management practice in the workplace. Leaners will be introduced to a range of management and communication theories and concepts, as well as techniques to apply in practice relating to: managing people, leading, managing change, managing conflict, negotiating and communicating professionally in a range of organisational contexts.
