Course Summary

Psychiatric / Mental Health nursing is a specialist field within the health care profession. Over the course of this four-year honours degree course, students will develop the professional knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to meet the nursing needs of individuals experiencing a range of mental health feelings, problems and conflicts. The nurse is concerned with helping to restore and maintain mental health and has an educational role in the prevention of psychiatric illness.

The primary objective of psychiatric nursing is to facilitate the maximum development of the mental health of the individual who has psychiatric problems and to promote mental health in the wider community.

A major focus of psychiatric nursing is to rehabilitate patients so that as many as possible can live full lives in community settings, and to support those already living in the community. At the heart of the role of the psychiatric nurse is the ability to establish therapeutic relationships with individuals and their families. Good communication skills are essential to form and maintain these relationships.

Over the course of this four-year course, you will develop the professional knowledge, skills and attitude needed to communicate with people experiencing mental distress and to form a therapeutic relationship with them and their families. Student’s theoretical knowledge and practical skills will be developed through the use of innovative and traditional teaching and learning approaches in modern teaching spaces and simulated learning environments.

As an undergraduate student psychiatric nurse you will learn the importance of multidisciplinary team-working with Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and others.

You will learn how to use various therapies and interventions to restore and maintain patients’ mental health and have an educational role in the prevention of mental distress. The work is very challenging and can be most rewarding.
