The aim of the Certificate in User Experience (UX) design course (funded by Springboard+) is to give students extensive knowledge, understanding and competencies across a wide range of user experience design principles and practices including: User Experience design theory, creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation, digital visual communication and web design fundamentals.

As part of Product Design, user experience (UX) designers use creativity and computer skills to create products that provide meaningful and relevant experiences to users. This involves the research and design of the entire user experience of a product, including aspects of user research, user journeys, design thinking techniques, usability, prototyping and Branding.
The aim of the Certificate in User Experience (UX) design course is to provide students with a strong balance of technical knowledge and theory in usability, digital design, branding and functionality. The student will have an understanding of various user experience principles, technologies and usability theories. This theoretical grounding will compliment their practical skill-set, in turn benefiting their overall capabilities as a creative practitioner. This course will also provide the student with a solid grounding in researching their target audience, and understanding the role of user research in the design process and for the creation of UX design across divergent digital mediums. The user experience (UX) design course will encourage enterprise and the development of entrepreneurial skills, behaviours and attitudes. Throughout the course students will be challenged to consider user experience issues from a variety of cultural perspectives.
The course will give students extensive knowledge, understanding and competencies across a wide range of user experience design principles and practises including: User Experience design theory, creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation, digital visual communication and web design fundamentals.
This one-year part-time programme will be targeted at anyone wanting to upskill their practical and technical UX skills. It will encourage graduates to become idea-driven UX designers competent in communicating through a variety of mediums and who have had the space to test out user theories through practical work. The course will use a mix of traditional and blended learning. They will be equipped to find employment in the following broad categories: User Experience (UX) Designer, Product Designer, Digital Designer, Graphic Designer or Web Designer. Participants will acquire skills in industry standard software for UX, Design and apply various human computer principles and develop an online portfolio.

Digital Visual Communication
Employ and manipulate materials and practical skills to successfully communicate ideas.
UX Web Design Fundamentals
Students will also acquire the skills needed to setup and create a website using an industry standard content management system.
User Experience (UX) Concepts
Design and create user experience design artifacts for screen based environments. Show an understanding of various human computer interaction principles and user experience theory for information design and architecture.
UX Front-End Development for Web
Enhance the visual design and usability of a website.
Entrepreneurship for Digital Industries
Identify the key skills and abilities necessary for successful entrepreneurship.
Work placement for Digital Industries
Assess personal growth and professional performance in the work environment through reflective practice.
This course is delivered using a blended learning approach with weekly interactive and hands-on practical lab-based sessions supported by independent and online learning.

The proposed programme will run in part-time online learning mode over two semesters, for example:
- Semester 1 (Spring: January to May)
- Semester 2 (Autumn: September - January)
The programme comprises five taught modules over two semesters followed by a four-week work placement within the web/digital sector.
Graduates of the programme will have a detailed knowledge and understanding of both the creative and developmental strands within the UX design discipline and will be skilled in the use of a range of digital media. They will be equipped to follow career paths in the following broad categories:
- UX designer - providing information architecture, high-quality designs, graphics, mock-ups, prototypes, and layouts for web sites and applications.
- Product designer - use their design skills and technical knowledge to improve the way that existing products work and look.
- Graphic/digital designer- designs graphic content and layout for both print and digital platforms.
- Web designer / front end developer – integrating visual elements into web pages.
- UI designer - User interface (UI) designers work closely with user experience (UX) designers and other design specialists. Their job is to make sure that every page and every step a user will experience in their interaction with the finished product will conform to the overall vision created by UX designers.

A FEE OF €400 APPLIES TO EMPLOYED / SELF-EMPLOYED APPLICANTS
This programme is designed for anyone who wishes to develop their design skills for Digital Media Design, they will also gain an understanding of current and emerging industry work practices in digital media marketing, web design and other design services.
The entry requirements for the programme are as follows:
The standard minimum entry requirement for first year admission to Level 7 courses at DkIT is:
Six Grades at O6 or H7 in Leaving Certificate
→ INCLUDING At least one H5 Grade, OR Minimum Points Score of 200
→ AND Mathematics Grade F2, O6 or H7
→ AND English Grade O6 or H7 OR Irish Grade O6 or H7
Applicants who do not meet the academic entry requirements but who have significant relevant experience in the technology or media sectors can apply under the Institute’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy that allows for the recognition of both formal and informal learning, non-accredited personal and professional education and work-based learning.
The RPL Application process would include an appraisal of a relevant ‘online’ portfolio of digital web/visual work. RPL Applicants who are applying with a portfolio will be short listed for a subsequent interview.

This course is designed to cater for potential applications with a keen interest in the creative industries and who wish to gain knowledge in User experience (UX) design. They will gain an understanding of current and emerging industry work practices in product design.
