Course Summary

The 1-semester part-time course is designed for existing Level 8 graduates from either a technical, financial, or business discipline who have a strong mathematical background and wish to learn about Blockchain fundamentals and applications. Blockchain is an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way.

Important notice about this course


Distributed Ledger Technology provides a mechanism to allow for decentralised protocols and decentralised applications (DAPPs) which will empower developers and architects to produce new forms of technology. 

The ledger itself can also be programmed to trigger transactions automatically. This technology has far reaching transformational potential for existing systems. The certificate is a first building block in a sequence of courses in Distributed Ledger Technology and Mathematical and Computational Finance. 

Course modules include:

  • Blockchain Foundations (5 credits): Distributed Ledger Technology, or Blockchain, is the technology that underpins cryptocurrencies. It enables a shared, trusted, public ledger of transactions, that everyone can inspect but which no single user controls. This module enables learners to understand the foundational components and requirements of such systems. 
  • Blockchain Applications (5 credits): This module will introduce learners to the ecosystems of DLT. Using Ethereum as a sample application, learners will understand capabilities of decentralised platforms. They will also consider appropriate uses of these platforms, including smart contracts. 

The course is delivered over one year as a part-time day-time course, Wednesdays, 16:00-18:00. (subject to change)

Applicants must already possess a Level 8 qualification (Honours Degree) in a numerate discipline like Business, Engineering or Computing, or demonstrate an equivalent capacity to succeed, based on experiential learning acquired through extensive industrial experience.  

This course aims to provide students with a background and interest in Digital Marketplace, Internet Technologies, FinTech or Security with a first, solid introduction to Blockchain Technology. The course is developed to enable learners to become familiar with the nuances of Blockchain technologies and to reason about applications of Blockchain
