Course Summary

This 12-week part-time course aims to support nurses/midwives/Health and Social Care Professionals (HSCPs) in enhancing their knowledge, skills and understanding of the core principles of palliative care. This aim is in line with the National Clinical Programme for Palliative Care HSE (2014) objective to build palliative care capacity among all nurses/midwives/allied health professions to respond confidently and in a timely manner to the palliative care needs of individuals and their families in any health care setting.

This course aims to support nurses/midwives/Health and Social Care Professionals (HSCPs) in the development of an appropriate level of knowledge, skill and attitude in the core principles of palliative care.

This aim is in line with the National Clinical Programme for Palliative Care HSE (2014) objective to build palliative care capacity among all nurses/midwives/Health and Social Care Professionals (HSCPs) to respond confidently and in a timely manner to the palliative care needs of individuals and their families in any health care setting.

Students will explore the theory, research and practice issues necessary to provide quality palliative care in contemporary health care environments.

Students will study the following topics:

  • Principles of Palliative Care
  • Effective communication techniques
  • Loss, grief and bereavement
  • Professional, Ethical and Legal Practice

The programme is delivered over one semester, via live online lectures  from 09.00hrs to 16.30 hrs 

In addition students are required to attend the DkIT campus from 09.00hrs to 16.30 hrs for 4  days over the semester.

Students are also required to undertake directed and independent study.

 

You must:

  • Nurses/Midwives registered with NMBI or equivalent
  • Health & Social Care Professionals (HSCPs) registered with a recognised professional body
  • Work in a practice setting where there are individuals with life-limiting illness, for the duration of the programme
  • Due to the blended learning delivery within this course students should have access to a PC / Mac, a headset with a mic, and a broadband internet connection from home, so as to be able to fully participate in the course
  • Basic IT skills essential
  • Applicants may be interviewed
  • Applicants should have a minimum of 1 years post registration experience

Applicants must submit copies of their CV, academic transcripts and professional registration with their application. 

This clinically focused course is for registered health professionals involved in the delivery of palliative care in a variety of settings including hospices, aged and residential care, community and primary health care and hospital.
