Course Summary
This 10-credit part-time programme focuses on developing knowledge and skills in molecular biology, genetics and the current and emerging laboratory techniques used in modern veterinary practice. The programme addresses the relevant applications of these techniques and technologies and their role in improving animal health.

This course consists of one 10-credit module which is delivered on a part-time basis over one semester. The course content includes: Introduction to Animal Biology; Animal Genetics and Genomics; Principles of Molecular Based Laboratory Techniques; Applications in Animal Health; Laboratory Skills.

This module is co-delivered with the full-time BSc in Veterinary Nursing programme so the timetables are interdependent. The programme will be delivered on the DkIT campus over two days per week.
There are 3 hours of lectures each week. There is also a weekly three-hour practical class.
This course was identified as being of high relevance to many veterinary nurses in practice and will enhance skills and knowledge in the areas of emergency and critical care of small animals. It will also be of value to veterinary nurses who wish to specialise in this area or move to a more senior role within the practice.
Course fee is €700 payable in 2 instalments as follows:
- Instalment 1: €150 (non-refundable) is payable to confirm your acceptance of a course place.
- Instalment 2: €550 is payable by the 28th February.
Applicants must have a minimum of a BSc in Veterinary Nursing (or equivalent) which is registerable with the Veterinary Council of Ireland. Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirement may be considered for entry using the Institute's Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) procedures.
