Active IQ Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym)
This 1-year course will train learners to a professionally competent level enabling them to plan, instruct and evaluate safe and effective exercise programmes within a gym or health club environment.

The aim of this qualification is to train learners to a professionally competent level enabling them to plan, instruct and evaluate safe and effective exercise programmes within a gym or health club environment.
The qualification consists of five mandatory units:
- Unit 1 Principles of anatomy and physiology and fitness
- Unit 2 Professionalism and customer care for fitness instructors
- Unit 3 Health and safety in the fitness environment
- Unit 4 Conducting client consultations to support positive behaviour change
- Unit 5 Planning and instructing gym-based exercise
Successful achievement of all five units must be achieved for the full qualification.
One evening (Wednesdays 6.30pm-9.30pm) per week for one academic year.
This qualification sits at Level 3 on the EQF and entitles learners to gain professional accreditation with the Register of Exercise Professionals in Ireland (REPS Ireland). It also enables progression to the EQF Level 4 qualification in Personal Training for learners who wish to further their knowledge and skills and become personal trainers.
Learners may also progress on to the Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy or Pilates mat work qualification where they will be provided with the knowledge and skills to practice these skills sports massage alongside gym instructing in the health club environment.
Tuition fees for this course are €650.00.

Some experience of gym-based exercise, including free-weights is highly recommended. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary. There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and candidates should have basic skills in communication.
Adults (aged 18+) wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as gym-based fitness instructors.

The Active IQ Certificate in Gym Instructing (Gym) is a level 2 qualification on the UK Qualifications and Credit Framework (level 3 on the European Qualifications Framework). This qualification provides access onto the European Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS Ireland) at level 3 and is fully accredited by the European Health and Fitness Association (European Health and Fitness Association).
