Illegal Access Points

Some staff feel it is okay to simply purchase a wireless router and plug it into the DkIT network for their own use. However, this is a clear violation of ICT Policy as outlined above, and causes more problems than solutions. It is very seriously frowned upon by Computer Services.

If you need wireless in your area, please let us know and we will do our best to help you out. In the near future we will be locking out all non-institute equipment from the network, so better to contact us sooner rather than later.

If you are a research group or business on campus and must have your own access point, please ensure the following:

  • The device's SSID is named after your business, for easy identification
  • That you have proper wireless security enabled eg. WPA, WPA2 or better. NOT WEP - it was 'cracked' back in 2001 and is one of the first tricks tried by potential "hackers".
