Overview: Recent restructuring of water governance in Ireland has attempted to facilitate a more integrated national approach to the management of Irish water resources. Changes include the establishment of Irish Water and the introduction and subsequent repeal of charges for water and waste water services; and changes in governance to be facilitated through the second River Basin Management Plan. This research is providing the first known assessment of the socio-economic impact of past, present and future water resources policy and governance in Ireland through three key objectives: 1) a description of historical and current water policy and governance in the Republic of Ireland; 2) an assessment of the socio-economic value of water in the Republic of Ireland and how this has been affected by recent policy and governance change; and 3) An assessment of the social value of water and the social implications of changes in water resources availability in Ireland under future climate change scenarios.
